Keep it in proportion
Decide how much you can afford to lose before you open an app, and keep to it. A free bet is never a reason to stake more than you planned.
Set a deposit limit before your first bet, and take a break when a session runs long. These are the tools each bookmaker offers.
Ladbrokes and Coral both offer deposit limits, a maximum stake limit, a curfew, reality checks, play breaks, time out and self-exclusion.
Betfred, DragonBet and London Bet all offer deposit limits, reality checks and self-exclusion. Betfred and London Bet add time out, DragonBet adds loss limits and time-out periods, and London Bet adds bespoke limits.
Midnite offers loss limits, net spend limits, reality checks and self-exclusion, plus a cool off that blocks your account for one day up to 30 days. Fitzdares offers a loss limit on its casino and a timeout option for short breaks.
Sister sites and self-exclusion
If you have excluded yourself, stay excluded. A sister site is never a way around a self-exclusion.
A bookmaker's own self-exclusion applies to that business, so check whether its terms reach other brands before you rely on it. Gamstop, described above, is the wider option.
Ladbrokes and Coral, which are part of the Entain Group, list among their conditions that you have not excluded yourself with another Entain brand or through a service such as Gamstop.
At Betfred, a self-exclusion on an online account covers all of its online platforms.
Sister sites are grouped here by the company behind them, only to help you compare. The method page explains how, and the about page says who writes this site.
Adults only
Gambling is for adults only. In most cases, the minimum legal age for gambling in Great Britain is 18, and every bookmaker we review asks for the same.
Do not let anyone under the legal age use your betting accounts, and keep your login details private.
To block gambling sites on a device you share, work through these steps in order. First, set a passcode on the device and keep betting apps and saved card details off any device a child or young person can use.
Second, turn on the parental controls or content filters in the device settings, and on your home internet connection wherever your provider offers them. Set them from an account only you can change.
Third, if you are trying to stop gambling yourself, tell the people you share devices with so they can help you keep the blocks in place. Check each device you use, because a block on one does not carry over to the others.
